Simran Kaur

Founder at Power Women

Some people have wonderful souls and were created to change the world. Simran Kaur is one of these people. When we first reached out to her, she accepted right away, and we were ecstatic to feature her on Waxd'Elle.

I'm always a fan of individuals who value education, everyone loves amazing success stories of dropouts who end up becoming billionaires, but education is the best pathway to success. Simran holds an MBA from INSEAD and prior to that she completed a master's in Software Systems Engineering at RWTH Aachen. She's worked at startups and large corporations and last but not least, she speaks 6 languages!

Alright Simran, the floor is yours!

Please provide us with your name(s)

Simran Kaur.

Where are you from? Tell us about you (background info)?

This is both a very interesting and difficult question to answer in today’s time. Life and destiny have taken me to different places, and I am grateful for that.

I grew up in a middle-class family in Calcutta and was fortunate that my parents put a lot of emphasis on academics. My parents have been a big influence in my life. They came from a small town in Northern India and moved to Calcutta in the 70s to start a life from nothing. I did well at school and went onto study engineering. I was among the first children in the extended family who studied abroad on a scholarship.

If India is my birth home, then Germany is my work home. The country made it possible to get world-class education at almost no cost. I pursued my master’s in Software Systems Engineering at RWTH, Aachen and worked on the side to fund my education. I did my research at the European Microsoft Innovation Centre and then found my first job with the German engineering giant Siemens where I worked in product development in the Health-tech space. I was lucky to be inducted into the talent development program and also founded the Diversity Initiative together with the Chief Diversity Officer’s office. I remain grateful to the opportunities I received and the incredible men and women who mentored me and influenced my personal and professional life.

After my MBA at INSEAD, I moved to Singapore working at an early-stage startup and then to the UAE where I led Marketing for Philips Healthcare for the region. I have also led the INSEAD Alumni Association in the UAE as President. I am an Ambassador at Girls X Tech, Advisor for Loyal VC and Mentor at Founders Institute. I was GCC’s 50 Women Leaders (2016) and was featured in the book, BalanceForBetter supported by the UN. I have worked across corporates and startups in Germany, Singapore and the UAE and also taught as guest faculty at prestigious universities.

I am a bit of a polyglot and speak English, German, Hindi, Punjabi, and Bengali and basic Italian. I am married, my better half is from Italy, and we are blessed with two wonderful children. I hope that by the time our children grow up and join the workforce, we have indeed achieved a world which is more equal and fairer.

Why are you starting this business?

When I started out my professional life, I did not think about the ceiling, the pay gap, or topics such as diversity and inclusion. I came into the workforce believing that the playing field was level. I became mindful of many of these topics as my career progressed. As many other women, I too experienced being excluded, and realized that my journey had hurdles, which as a young ambitious girl I had never imagined. Over time I realized we needed to build the right networks and a support system to overcome these challenges, get stronger and keep on rising. And Power Women was born! There are so many powerful women are doing amazing work and their stories need to be told. We want to not only bring these women leaders into the C-Suites, Boardrooms and make them have multi-billion dollar exits but we also want to inspire the next generation of women. I hope that by the time our children grow up and join the workforce, we have indeed achieved a world which is more equal and fairer.

Please provide us with some information about your business. (description, business model, etc.)

We believe, the old maxim "it's lonely at the top" is not a mere cliché and that the world needs more women to reach the top and to stay there! We are aiming to impact change at the highest levels!

We are building a community of stellar women leaders from across the globe. We believe that many of these leaders with a support system and strong network can become the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, enter boardrooms, build multibillion-dollar businesses. Overall, this pool of talent can make a huge difference and impact not only in the business world but also the overall society as well.

This year we launched a life changing and impactful platform, built by women for women to drive the personal and professional growth of our network. Our community is made up of stellar women leaders from across sectors, who bring in strong background and experience and who believe in holistic growth, making a difference and giving back. Our members not only believe in investing in their own growth but also in moving the needle and making a difference for others. Are you one of them? Come connect with us at hello@powerwomen.world.

What stage are you in right now? What are you looking for at this stage for your business?

Thanks to the support of so many amazing men and women across the globe, we have grown very fast. Power Women has recently received a Fellowship at the Founders Institute Silicon Valley and GCC program. We were also a participant at the Asia Berlin PDL program. We have quickly built a community of strong women, launched our own development program, and built global partnerships. When I hear stories from our members of the impact we have had on their growth and on their lives, I am encouraged and humbled to keep working towards our vision of a more balanced world.

Having said that, the problem we are looking to solve is a very big one, and clearly this cannot be done alone. Hence, I keep on looking for like-minded partners who share the same values and keep on helping us grow. We are always looking to expand our network further with more talented women leaders and strengthen our team with talented men and women who believe passionately that equality can make this world a better place.

What do you want us to remember about you?

The year 2020 has disrupted us and our lives in many ways. It has stripped our minds to think of the most fundamental elements which impact us as human beings and society as a whole. I believe it is time for us to look at the way we lead, the way we run our businesses, the way we live. It is now time for humanity to reset, to reimagine, and to act for a better tomorrow for us and our children. Old models have failed in the face of this crisis and it's time to build something new. And I firmly believe that women should not just be active builders of this new world, but also leaders of it.

Last year at the onset of the pandemic, I lost my job. I would be lying if I said I was OK. In hindsight I feel some things happen for a reason. In my case it was time for me to give back. And so started the journey of building something meaningful and something I am passionate about. I want things to change. I want things to change before my daughter grows up. And I am building a company to do that.

The universe somehow came together to help us make this dream take shape. I am still learning. And as we keep moving forward, I want to take time to thank everyone who supported us. I am very grateful!

I would like to be remembered as someone who passionately worked to bring about change for good. I know it’s a very long journey, but I am grateful to have started it with the support of so many incredible and generous men and women across the globe. My father once attended a talk by Mother Teresa where she said, not everyone can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. This has also stuck with me and has been a guiding principle for my own journey. And I am looking forward to making my contribution towards a happier and fairer world!
