Emma Michel

Founder & CEO at Cogni XR Health

Let's pretend that you and I are playing a video game together. In the game we need to assemble the best possible entrepreneur. The goal of the game is for our character (the entrepreneur) to use technology to impact the meta world and make it better for every character living in it.

If instead of building my entrepreneur from scratch I could choose Emma Michel, I would win. Because Emma Michel has been winning in real life.

She immigrated from Haiti to Canada at the tender age of 5. She's been very active helping young women achieve their goals for years. Emma designed programs for young mothers under 18 years old as well as young women who left their homes too early. This queen studied sciences, intervention, and mental health. She worked with Quebec's Ministry of Health and Social Services. She became a Hive Global Leaders Fellow and was awarded the Google Travel Grant to participate in Afrotech in California (all expenses paid by Google by the way!). Emma was accepted into the Oculus Launchpad program for 2 years and this is where she learned about virtual reality. Now, she's tackling mental health issues using VR and founded Cogni XR Health to do so.

Alright Emma, the floor is yours!

Please provide us with your name(s)

Emmanuella Michel, Ph.D Candidate, Founder of Cogni.

Where are you from?

I was born in Haiti, came to Canada at 5 years old.

Tell us about you (background info)?

I was a young woman that was anxious and afraid to talk in public. I did a bachelor’s degree in sciences with minors in intervention (addiction, youth and family intervention and management of health and social services) to learn more about human behavior and contribute to improve wellness. I worked coordinated several programs for young women at my first job at the Women’s Y of Montreal where we went to high schools and at-risk communities to offer a program called Leadership in Action that combined Kickboxing and self-awareness workshops, I designed programs for Young mothers under 18 years old with their babies in High school and worked with Bon Dieu Dans la rue Young women who left home. After several years, I wanted to learn more about mental health, I got a job in Administration at the Douglas hospital where I prepared my next project which was to develop a home for girls with diverse challenges in mental health (oppositional defiant, bipolar, personality disorder…) and inside the autistic syndrome. The project was accepted by a public establishment in Quebec, and we signed a contract with the Ministry of Health and Social Services. I worked with many girls and their families between the age of 13 to 25 for about 10 years. Following my decision to close the group home because of Government cutbacks, I started discovering how I could leverage technology to provide similar services but by reaching more people in Canada and beyond. I started applying to different program. Became a Hive Global Leaders Fellow was awarded the Google Travel Grant to participate in Afrotech in California all expenses paid by Google and Got accepted in the Oculus Launchpad program for 2 years where I learned about virtual reality. It is within the Launchpad program that I started working on the Cogni XR platform
